Typographica is a theme for WordPress designed by typographer A.Gilhespy and web design company Kino Creative, based on the journal of the same name by the English typographer, writer and editor Herbert Spencer. Spencer’s radical layouts for the New Series of his influential publication made for what design historian Rick Poynor describes as an ‘exceptionally open page’. With this theme we have attempted to transfer this philosophy to the WordPress platform.
The theme is based on a two column layout with emphasis placed on clarity of the main column. This is fixed in width with priority placed on line length to achieve consistent readbility. Type in the main column is set with a large leading for the same purpose—Spencer himself specified a then-unprecedented 10/18pt setting for his NS layouts. Images can be run larger in the column through simple tweaking of the CSS without affecting the line length, and type size can be changed throughout in the same manner. The CSS is deliberately very light and simple to adjust to requirements. The sidebar column is fixed in order that visibility of the site title and navigation is maintained. Titling is set by sIFR in a non-web typeface for the purpose of subtle distinction—again this can be readily altered.
Typographica is well suited to online portfolios, blogs and sites that wish to express coolness and clarity in design, those that wish to maximise readability of longer texts. Rates vary by application and start from £49.00 for personal usage. A full set-up / customisation service is available and recommended. Please contact A.Gilhespy with all enquiries.
